The Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden(PERSGA) received an invitation from H.E. Dr. Nabil Mohammed Ahmed, Minister of Higher Education and Research in the Republic of Djibouti, to participate in the East Africa Environmental Risk and opportunities Summit, which was held under the patronage of His Excellency the President Mr. Omar Ismael Guelleh, President of the Republic of Djibouti, at Kempinski hotel in Djibouti during the period 2-4 May 2015. Three experts, Dr. Salim Mahmoud Al-Moghrabi, Dr. Ahmed Khalil and Mr. Habib Abdi, represented PERSGA in this summit where they presented two scientific papers about the corals and the mangroves. PERSGA representatives also chaired one of the sessions in addition to their participation in the closing ceremony of the summit.
The conference came as preparation for the COP21 on Climate Change to be held in Paris city during the month of December 2015. Several important themes were discussed during the summit. They were related to climate change, global warming, renewable energy use, the coral reefs, the mangroves, solid waste management, and technical and scientific development in those areas.
The major conference recommendation was to establish an Environmental Observatory in the Republic of Djibouti that could deal with different contemporary environmental issues that could be of interest to the Republic, East Africa the neighboring countries. The summit has received wide media coverage and there was high appreciation to the participation of PERSGA and the role it plays for the protection of the marine environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
