09/04/2018 Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)

The Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA), in collaboration with the National  Focal Point (Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources), organized a national training workshop on Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) on 9th-10th of April 2016 in Aqaba, Jordan. This workshop mainly aimed to: 1) provide background on the concept of the MEE of MPAs; 2) present information on the international standard evaluation frameworks and methods used for MEE of MPAs and then; 3) train participants on the WB scorecard used for MEE of MPAs; 4) show the evaluation method/approaches for MEE of Socotra Island MPA, developed by Dr. Zaher Al-Agwan for his doctorate university   at an Australian university, as a case study.

The workshop was held within the framework of the component III of the World Bank (WB) Strategic Ecosystem-based Management (SEM) Project for the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden implemented by PERSGA, which is funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). It was opened by Mr. Suleiman Najadad (Environmental Commissioner- Aqaba Zone Economic Special Authority (AZESA)) in presence of the PERSGA representatives: the coordinator of the SEM project component III (Mr. Bashar Bataineh) and coordinator of PERSGA MPA Evaluation Program (Dr. Zaher Al-Agwan) who was the instructor of the workshop. About 20 participants from different sectors, including sea ports, Fishermen Union, Aqaba Marine Park and AZESA, attended the workshop.
