National Training Workshop on Preparation of Inventories of Persistent Organic Pollutants Using the Toolkits Approved by Stockholm Convention
In collaboration between the General Presidency of Meteorology and Environmental Protection “PME”, and the Regional Organization for the Conservation of Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden “PERSGA” a national workshop has been organized on "Preparation of Inventories of Persistent Organic Pollutants Using the Toolkits Approved by Stockholm Convention". The workshop took place at PERSGA headquarter in Jeddah during the period 21st - 22nd Rajab 1431 H, 3rd - 4th July 2010.
The workshop aimed at training national specialists from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the preparation of inventories of persistent organic pollutants using the toolkits approved by the Stockholm Convention. It has been attended by specialists from PERSGA, PME, and several other stakeholders including ministries, universities and relevant authorities.
Organization of the workshop comes within the framework of implementation of the regional project *"Promotion of Strategies to Reduce Unintentional Production of POPs in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Coastal Zone" implemented in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The workshop included lectures introducing the Stockholm Convention, persistent organic pollutants, as well as the standard toolkit for estimation of the emissions of POPs in general, and focusing on dioxins and furans. It also included practical training on the preparation of inventories of the emissions of POPs and the environmental and socio-economic impact of these pollutants and their effects on human health was also included.
