PERSGA participated in the 12th Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans, which was held during 20-22 September 2010 in Bergen, Norway. The Meeting discussed several issues focusing on Ecosystem-based Management, GPA Implementation and the Regional Seas Programmes, Marine and Coastal Invasive Species and Ballast Water Management and Economic Valuation of Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Services. Updates were provided by Regional Seas Programmes in the meeting, focusing on the main challenges and opportunities experienced during the year, with particular emphasis on governance.
Worth mentioning that a delegate from the UNEP Regional Seas office visited PERSGA HQ in Jeddah at the beginning of last May 2010, whereby a series of meetings with PERSGA technical team and a framework for PERSGA joint activities with the UNEP Regional Seas Program during the biennium 2010-2011 was formulated. PERSGA will participate in executions of global GEF supported projects focusing on economic valuation of coastal resources and enhancement of GPA implementation, planned to be implemented by UNEP using the Regional Seas Programs as a platform.
PERSGA has recently prepared and submitted “Marine Biodiversity Outlook Report for the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden”, which is part of a global assessment report carried out by UNEP in this focus.
