In collaboration with ISESCO and the IOC-UNESCO, PERSGA has organized a regional capacity building workshop on “Sustainable Development Indicators for Coastal and marine Environment in the Red Sea and
Addressing the opening session, PERSGA SG, Prof Z. H. Abu Ghararah pointed out the importance of developing and application of Regional Set of Indicators for monitoring/assessment of progress in implementation of the Regional Convention and Protocols, chiefly at this stage where all member states have taken steps towards implementing coastal and marine management plans and programs.
The workshop training program was conducted by two experts from the ICG/NEAMTWS, IOC-UNESCO (Dr. Stefano Belfiore, Dr. Julain Barbière) and was based on the “Handbook for Measuring Success and Outcomes of Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management” developed by the IOC in 2009. Beside the training sessions, the workshop included group discussions to draft set of regional governance, ecological and socioeconomic indicators and prepare a road map for their final development, adoption and application in the region. The background for the logical framework was based on the long term goals and objectives of Regional Action Plan attached to the Jeddah Convention 1982.
