20/12/2010 Climate Change Adaptation Planning and Financing

PERSGA and UNEP/ROWA organize a joint regional workshop on Adaptation Planning and Financing in collaboration with ISESCO

The Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea & Gulf of Aden (PERSGA), and UNEP Regional Office for West Asia (UNEP/ROWA), with support from the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO),   organize a regional workshop on “Climate Change Adaptation Planning and Financing, during 20-22 December 2010 at PERSGA HQ in Jeddah

Adaptation funding is set to substantially increase over the coming few years, particularly that the  Adaptation Fund is now fully operational, and with the indications that the ongoing climate negotiation will result in substantial amount of financing be available to support adaptation actions by developing countries, especially the most vulnerable. As a landmark in development assistance history, countries will be able to access the Adaptation Fund directly (so called Direct Access) through AF-approved National Implementing Entity (NIE). So far, only few countries in our Region have benefited from Adaptation Funding in general and from access to the Adaptation Fund in particular. This has been mainly attributed to limited national and regional capacity to prepare Adaptation projects to the acceptable quality that meet the requirements of the adaptation funding institutions. The overall objective of current workshop is to enhance the capacities of region in adaptation action planning and accessing adaptation financing. The Workshop will provide the know-how on:

·         Adaptation within the UNFCCC frameworks·
What constitute Adaptation Actions/Projects
Approaches to Adaptation Planning and project Design
Adaptation Financing: availability and accessibility
Adaptation Fund: strategic priorities, operational policies and procedures
Adaptation Fund: Accreditation process for National Implementing Entities (MIEs)

The workshop is attended by participants from PERSGA countries (Djibouti, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen), and several other Arab countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Oman, Morocco, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine)
