22/01/2011 Climatology and Climate Variability of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden

PERSGA held a regional workshop on the “Climatology and Climate Variability of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Large Marine Ecosystem” at its Headquarter in Jeddah during Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th January 2011. The workshop aims at establishing a regional mechanism and tools for marine/coastal climatic and oceanographic monitoring data, undertaking joined assessments,, research and predictions. It also aims at building capacities and enriching knowledge of the participants on characteristics and variability of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden coastal/marine climate and influences on the ecosystem.

PERSGA Secretary General, Prof Ziad bu Ghararh addressed the workshop opening session. In his statement about the workshop he indicated its importance as a platform to facilitate establishment of regional mechanism for cooperation, exchange of expertise and information and undertaking integrated assessments of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden marine climate and oceanography at regional scale; which provide better understanding through investigating observations and data over wider geographical space of interconnected oceanic bodies.

The workshop was attended by specialists from PERSGA countries (Saudi Arabia, Jordan Egypt, Sudan, Djibouti and Yemen).  Dr Jerom Vialard (Directeur de recherches à l'Institut de Recherches pour le Développement (IRD), Laboratoire d'Océanographie - Expérimentation et Approches Numériques, Paris France) leaded the training in the workshop by presenting a series of lectures on various topics such as modes of tropical climates & their predictability, tropical cyclones, oceans and climate, etc. Several other experts from the Region delivered lectures on the oceanography and special characteristics of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden ecosystem, including Dr. M. Alsaffnni (University of Sanaa), Dr. M. Alamazroui (King Abdulaziz University), Dr. M. Badran (PERSGA), and Dr. A. Khalil (PERSGA). Delegates from the countries contributed by presentations on characteristics/variability of coastal/marine climate and oceanography and their monitoring experiences in PERSGA member states.
