Chief of POPS Unit and Deputy Director of Environmental Management Branch of the United Nations Organization for Industrial Development UNIDO, Dr. Mohammad Eisa has been in a mission to PERSGA during the period January 22nd – 24th 2011. Dr. Eisa has held discussions with E H the Secretary General Professor Ziad Abu Ghararah concerning ongoing PERSGA UNIDI joint activities and future projects. Following directions of H E the Secretary General, Director of Projects Management Dr. Mohammad Badran has discussed with Dr. Eisa broadening the current collaboration to include new projects on Contamination in Ports and Excellence in the application of Best Available Technology BAT and Best Environmental Practices BEP in cutting unintentional emissions of Persistent Organic Pollutants.
The visit of Dr. Eisa to PERSGA comes in the framework of follow up of the ongoing project on Strategies for Cutting Unintentional Production of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Coastal Zone of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The Project’s Regional Coordinator, Dr. Mohammad Badran has briefed Dr. Eisa on the progress of the project pointing out the recent signing of Partnership Agreements with two major Industries in the region that have expressed interest in benefiting from the project for introduction of BAT / BEP in their activities. These are the Sues Petroleum Processing Corporation in Egypt and the Jordanian Mines Corporation in Jordan. Partnership agreements with industry will expand in the coming days to include six more industries and NGOs in Egypt, Jordan, Sudan and Yemen. Expressing his satisfaction of the project’s progress Dr. Eisa has agreed to amend the current MoU signed between PERSGA and UNIDO to include further allocations for laboratory analysis, supporting research students in LDCs (Sudan and Yemen) and developing new projects.
