28/11/2011 Fishery Management in PERSGA Region

The Regional Intergovernmental Meeting to Initiate the Establishment of a Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Fishery Management Arrangement (the meeting) was convened by PERSGA with the support of FAO. The meeting was conducted from 28-30 November 2011 at PERSGA Headquarter in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The meeting was attended by representatives from Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia,Stock Management in PERSGA Region Sudan and Yemen, besides experts from FAO and PERSGA.
In his opening address delivered to the Meeting, the PERSGA Secretary General, Professor Ziad Abu Ghararah welcomed the participants and cooperation with FAO. He accredited the need for effective regional cooperation to harmonize fisheries management strategies and plans and complement the efforts of adopting responsible fisheries and combating IUUF. The FAO representative, Dr. Piero also addressed the opening session signifying the efforts of Region’s countries to establish strong cooperation mechanism for fisheries management.
The “three days” Meeting program has included several sessions that have discussed the status of fishery resources and fishery management in the region and approaches to reinforce regional cooperation and coordination mechanisms. Two regional review studies recently undertaken by FAO and PERSGA in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden were presented in the meeting by Dr. Izzat Faidi and Dr. Paul Nichols. A session was also dedicated for exchange with other regions expertise, Stock Management in PERSGA Regionincluding a presentation on the experience of the GFCM (General Fishery Commission of the Mediterranean) by Mr. Abdullah Srour, a presentation on the experience of RECOFI by Dr. Piero Mannini, and a presentation on PERSGA Living Marine Resources Program by Dr. Ahmed Khalil. A wide range of options and experience of regional fisheries arrangements; legal, financial and organizational aspects were also presented in the meeting by Prof Gail Lugten, Dr Annick VanHoutte, and Mr Alessandro Lovatelli (FAO, Rome).
The meeting agreed on the establishment of a regional Fisheries Task Force that will work under technical support of PERSGA/FAO and coordination of PERSGA, in order to develop a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate establishment and functioning of effective regional cooperation mechanism for fisheries management in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
