The 2nd Regional Meeting on the Status of Elasmobranches (Sharks and Rays) in the PERSGA region was held during 23-24 April 2012 at PERSGA HQ in Jeddah.
Attended by representatives from fishery-, wildlife- and environment administration departments in PERSGA member states, the meeting discussed the current status of sharks and rays and their management in the region, focusing on options for regional coordination and cooperation in implementing policies and actions for their conservation and protection from targeted illegal fishing in the PERSGA region. The meeting also discussed enhancing implementation of the recommendations adopted by the first Regional Meeting on Elasmobranches held in 2009, concerning conservation and protection of sharks in the Region. The meeting agreed on the framework, objectives, short- and long term actions to be considered by the Regional Plan for Conservation of Sharks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden under development.
