A World Bank Mission visited PERSGA Headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia during the period September 8th - 12th 2012. The mission objective was to pre-appraise the Global Environment Facility project "Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Strategic Ecosystem Management" by discussing. project design, including:
(i) financial management; (ii) technical components, RF, economic, financial, institutional, safeguards and risk related aspects; (iii) agreeing project implementation arrangements including country-PERSGA coordination for implementation of technical aspects.
The World Bank team consisted of Sophie Hemnann, Task Team Leader, MNSEN, Samia AI-Duaij, Operations Officer and Environmental Specialist, MNSE , Lina Tutunji, Procurement Specialist, MNAPC, and Moad Alrubaidi, Financial Management Specialist, MNAFM. The Expressed its thanks to PERSGA for the warm welcome and effective arrangements of the mission. During the mission a workshop joining the World Bank team, PERSGA team and PERSGA Focal Points has been organized. The Focal Points were presented the outcomes of pre-appraisal including technical design, institutional and financial arrangements and their implications for the countries and given the opportunity to provide feedback. The countries fully endorsed the project design and their participation.
The project will focus on applying ecosystem based management on the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, focusing on improving investment in natural and human resources to increase the net benefit of the ecosystem services through better management of protected areas, fishery regulations and monitoring of the natural habitats and socioeconomic dimensions. The project implementation will take four years and regional expertise will be highly involved in the implementation.
